St. Mary's was established as a parish school in 1899. During its early years the school was staffed by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Nur and later by the Sisters of St. Joseph. Today the school has a faculty of twelve full-time lay teachers as well as four classroom aides, and part- time instructors in art, music, physical
education, and computer technology.
We offer a full-day kindergarten, two full-day preschool sessions, and one morning preschool session. Students in all grades benefit from our partnership with the Lynch School of Education (Boston College) student teacher program.
St. Mary's offers a rich tradition of Catholic school education for students in preschool through grade eight. We are a culturally diverse community that is guided by the Commandments of Love of God and Love of Neighbor. In addition to religious instruction, the school curriculum challenges students to gain mastery in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies by fostering
inquiry, problem solving, and decision making skills. Teachers develop and support an awareness of the connections between subjects by providing opportunities for student projects and presentations. We believe that the curriculum should be integrated and reflect life experiences. At all levels, students are provided with opportunities to explore their talents and interests when they
participate in weekly art, music, physical education, and computer classes. At the eighth grade level, students take a course in Spanish language and culture. All St. Mary's students are expected to work cooperatively, and with respect for one another, as they experience the excitement that accompanies new learning.
Preschool education at St. Mary's prepares young children for new relationships and the acquisition of language and other readiness skills. There are two full-day classes, one for three-year-olds and another for four-year-olds. A multi-age
morning session is also available.
Kindergarten
The full-day kindergarten program challenges children to continue to develop their social skills while being exposed to activities that promote language development and pre-reading skills, as well as number, science, and social studies concepts. Kindergarten screening takes place in the spring. We recommend that a child entering kindergarten be five
years of age by September 1.
Extended Day
St. Mary's offers an Extended Day Program (EDP) for families who need child care at the close of the regularly scheduled school day. This program is designed to ensure that each child will feel safe, secure, and successful. The emphasis is on providing appropriate educational materials and activities that the children can access independently. For
students with homework assignments to complete, there is also a supervised study period. The program is staffed by the school's faculty and by undergraduate students from Boston College.
Weather Watch: If there is inclement weather (snow, sleet, or ice storm), and school must be cancelled or delayed, please tune into WBZ or other local radio or TV stations for the Town of Brookline announcement. School closings can also be viewed online.
We will follow their lead. If there is no school or a morning delay in Brookline, then there is no school or the same delay for St. Mary's.
