Anthropologist and St. Mary grandparent Marion Kilson shared perspectives about African culture during a visit with seventh graders.

St. Marys Mardi Gras Breakfast takes place tomorrow, February 17th in the school cafeteria. This annual event occurs just before the start of the Lenten Season and offers PK – grade 8 students an opportunity to wear pajamas to school for the day and enjoy a pancake breakfast served by- their teachers! Festivities get underway at 7:35a.m.with final servings wrapping up by the 8:05a.m. start of the school day. Students in pj’s should remember to have a sturdy pair of shoes. (For safety reasons, no slippers, please!)

For Others, Too As we keep in mind the needs of our neighbors, students participating in the Mardi Gras Pancake Breakfast are invited to contribute children’s toothbrushes and toothpaste for the Horizons for Homeless Children Program. On the 17th, look for the donation bin at the entrance to our school cafeteria.

What Happens in Lent? Ash Wednesday, February 22nd, marks the beginning of the Lenten season. Lent is a journey of faith. During the time from Ash Wednesday to Holy Thursday we take special care to follow God’s will for our lives. It is a time of reconciliation as we ask Gods’ forgiveness and seek to follow Jesus Christ in all things. It is a time to move forward toward the light of Easter and the light of Christ in our lives.

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart… you shall love your neighbor as yourself.
‘Mark 12:30-31’

2012-2013 Tuition Rates arrive home today via backpack mail. This year’s tuition was determined after careful consideration of per pupil cost and our commitment to strong academic and enrichment programs including Spanish language and culture and the Boston College Education Seismology Project.

Pre-K Full and K-1, 5 days (8am – 2:15pm) $7,800
Pre-K, 5 days (8am – Noon) $6,300
K2-8 (8am – 2:25pm) $4,950

*Fundraising and Volunteering remain the same. EDP rates are to remain the same through December 2012.

2012-2013 Scholarship Information for families of K2 through grade 8 students who intend to apply for financial aid is available in the office. We can accept applications at this time; parents should be aware that the final deadline is March 30th.

The verification process should be completed by May 2nd. Families who prefer to use an online application may go forward with the process at anytime at http://www.factstuitionaid.com/

After School Specials! As some families may know, Miss D’s art program on Mondays has a class limit of ten students. That number has been reached for the winter session, but because of interest, we are able to offer a second afterschool enrichment class, conducted by Miss Emily Munson. This class for grades 1-4 students meets Mondays from 2:30-3:30pm in the art room.

Our students may recall working with Miss Munson last fall when she took over the school’s art program for Mrs. Corsini and helped students create mixed media self portraits. Emily earned her undergraduate degree at Lesley College where she majored in art therapy and studio art. She is on the staff of the Museum of Fine Arts where she teaches inquiry based lessons that highlight the Museum’s collections. She also acts as a community liaison in support of the Museum’s partnership with the West End’s Boys and Girls’ Club. Families interested in registration information should contact the “Office Ladies” by the February 13th.

Sweet! Brookline Recreation offers its annual Maple Sugaring Day, Saturday, March 10th. Participants will explore the wooded spots of Larz Anderson, learn how to tap for syrup and enjoy some sweet samples. Please see www.townofbrookline.com/recreation for registration information.

Spring Break With Eco-Explorers Brookline Recreation Department invites students to celebrate Earth Day with a week full of science and nature activities during April vacation. Children learn the principles of earth science, chemistry, biology, and physics by participating in earth, wind, water, and climate activities. our faculty can participate in professional workshops sponsored by the National Catholic Education Association. This year, the annual conference takes place in Boston from April 11-13th with all teachers and administrators in attendance. We recognize that this block of time may present a dilemma for working parents who may need to arrange childcare. Based on the interest, St. Mary’s is happy to offer a special Extended Day Program during this time. Our three day sessions will run from 8am- 4pm and will be led by EDP coordinator Mrs. Huong Corsini and staffed by our instructional assistants and aids. Please see the office for details.

Look for Arthur W. from grade four when the Wizard of Oz comes to town. Arthur W. is part of the cast of this Wheelock College production that runs through February 26th with special daytime performances during vacation week.

Larz Anderson Skating Rink The Larz Anderson Skating Rink, 25 Newton Street, Brookline is now open (weather permitting). This open air skating rink has a heated pavilion with a snack bar, skate rentals and a skate sharpening shop. Public skating hours are as follows:

Dear friends,

Catholic Schools Week is celebrated in our close knit school family and in the wider community of parochial schools across the country. It’s a time of renewing our Christian mission and recognizing with appreciation our students’ many opportunities for intellectual, social and spiritual growth.

Whenever we revisit the school mission or statement of purpose, it brings new life and energy to the common vision we share for our St. Mary community. The current mission statement was modified and adopted about a decade ago. It was a time when Annie Casey was a St. Mary parent, but not yet our PK lead teacher, “Miss Annie”, and Elaine Pearson’s middle schooler was still at home with her. The playground structures had just been installed, new curriculum and policies were in place and a number of other projects were in the works.

Although the statement was similar to what we now have, at the time we wanted to confirm its relevancy and find out how it was understood by the community.

One winter night we held an Open Forum for parents with the objective of learning about their hopes and expectations for Catholic school education at St. Marys. It was a lively and informative evening, lasting well past the scheduled time. And it was fruitful; a group of volunteers formed to help teachers and me review the statement.

The essence of our mission statement remains the same today although after a number of discussion sessions, “learning environment” was shortened and the meaning of “reverence” was expanded to include theologian Thomas Groome’s view expressed in Educating for Life. Dr. Groome uses the Latin roots (verily-truth and re-go back to) as a way of describing our on going quest to learn more about God and by extension, learning about His creations.

Each September our three R’s serve as a starting point for developing classroom mission statements. Monday’s day of reflection offered a mid year opportunity to renew and gain fresh insight into our students’ learning across grade levels. As we all strive to live out the Commandment of Love of God and Neighbor, we wish one and all a Happy Catholic School Week!

Happy New Year! Preschool students celebrate Chinese New Year, today, February 2nd. The children will play games, learn calligraphy and enjoy traditional Chinese cuisine and dance. Here’s to the Year of the Dragon!

Early Dismissal February 3rd is the first Friday of the month which means that there will be a noon dismissal so that teachers can attend their staff development meeting. EDP and hot lunches are available.

Sacrament of Reconciliation Students who are to receive First Communion in May are working with Miss Kelly
in preparation for the sacrament of First Penance. This service takes place Saturday, February 4th at St. Mary’s Lower Church at noon.

First Session! Girls in grades 3, 4 and 5 have an opportunity to participate in an exciting after school program, Strong Women, Strong Girls (SWSG). This mentoring program is facilitated by undergraduates from Boston College. The focus is to offer our students an opportunity to learn about exemplary female leaders through research and discussion. Participants will then have an opportunity to develop and carry out a community service project. On first Fridays the group meets from 12:00 to 1:30pm; on full days the sessions begin at 2:30pm.

The goal of the Strong Women, Strong Girls is to “connect girls with college women and put them on the path from classroom to boardroom— or any path they choose to take.” There is no fee for participation in this Friday afternoon activity. Parents or guardians whose daughters are interested in this ten week program can contact the office for enrollment information or school counselor Mary Worthington at mary.worthington@bc.edu

Game Change St. Mary coed basketball games with St. Theresa’s School scheduled for this Saturday have been changed to the following Saturday, February 11^th. However, our meet up with Holy Name this Sunday will take place at Mt. St. Joseph Academy, 637 Cambridge Street, Brighton. Come join us! The games are scheduled:

Grades 3 & 4: 2:45pm
Grades 5 & 6: 4:00pm

Food for Thought: We’re so grateful for the baked goods contributions for last Tuesday’s Curriculum Breakfast and ask you now to consider another important initiative: We are asking families to donate food items for our school wide project to benefit a local soup kitchen on February 1st. A list of suggested items consisting of sandwich materials, fresh fruit and juice boxes accompanies today’s mail.

Stormy Day? In the event that a snow or ice storm is predicted for morning or midday, and the Brookline Public Schools do not cancel, we will: (1) most likely cancel Extended Day, (2) encourage parents to pick up children before 2:25pm dismissal, and (3) encourage parents to use their discretion in sending a child to school under these circumstances.

What if?
Weather Watch Public announcements including “snow emergency”, “no school” and “delayed opening” are reported on local radio and television stations before 6:15am of the day in question. Normally, the decision will not be made until the early morning hours of that day. If there is no school or a morning delay for schools in Brookline, MA, there is no school or a delay for St. Mary’s as well. (Please note there is also a Brookline, NH). You may also call the school for a phone message regarding a school delay or cancellation.

Winter Winds bring a reminder that students should come to school dressed for the weather. Each class spends time outside as weather permits. Hats, warm coats or jackets and gloves are recommended. Looking ahead, students should wear boots for walking in icy, snowy weather. Indoors, however, students should then wear uniform shoes. All items must be labeled with student’s name.

Change in Schedule: This weekend’s basketball games with Our Lady’s in Waltham have been cancelled.
However, our grades 1-6 coed teams will play this Saturday at St. Jude’s in Waltham. Game times are as follows:

Calling All Bakers:
Donations of muffins and coffee cakes are being happily accepted for Tuesday the 24th when the school hosts its annual Curriculum Breakfast. Please see backpacks for this sign up form and a great service hour opportunity!

Annual Open House The school hosts its annual open house for incoming families on Wednesday, January 25th. In response to requests from current St. Mary parents, we would be delighted to provide an “insiders’ tour” for those interested in knowing more about the school curriculum and experiences for upcoming grades. Please contact the office to arrange a tour.

Grade Four is sponsoring a bake sale this Thursday, January 19th. Sales will be conducted during K2-grade 8 snack time with prices generally in the $.50 range. Half of the proceeds from the sale are to benefit a local homeless shelter and the remaining portion is to be used to defray costs for a February field study at the Tsongas Industrial History Center in Lowell.

In Observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, there are no classes Monday, January 16th.

Root for the Home Team! St. Mary coed basketball teams, comprising students in grades 1-6, play teams from the Jackson School of Newton this Sunday, January 15th beginning at 1 p.m. St. Mary hosts this “home game” at Mt. St. Joseph Academy located at 637 Cambridge Street, in Brighton.

In House Registration 2011-2012 Please be on the lookout for registration materials for students currently attending St. Mary’s and for their incoming siblings. Registration forms will accompany next week’s Update. These forms and $100 deposit for current students and incoming family members are due Wednesday, January 18th. The $100 deposit is a non refundable fee but will be applied towards the student’s 2012-2013 tuition.

Annual Open House The school hosts its annual open house for incoming families on Wednesday, January 25th. In response to a few requests from current St. Mary parents, we would be delighted to provide an “insiders’ tour” for those interested in knowing more about the school curriculum and experiences in following grades. Around Town: The weekend marks the commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King. In celebration of his contributions to our country through the Civil Rights Movement, Metropolitan Ministries partnering with Brandeis University will present a day of service on January 16th from 1-8pm. Look for Arthur from grade three when the Wizard of Oz comes to town. Arthur is part of the cast of this Wheelock College production that opens Jan 27th and runs through February 26th!

Miss Su is once again offering 3rd and 4th grade students an opportunity to learn Chinese traditional dance on Wednesday afternoons from 2:30-3:30 A special performance takes place at school during our Chinese New Years celebration.

First Friday Tomorrow is the first Friday of the month; there will be a noon dismissal so that teachers may attend their staff development meeting. EDP and hot lunches are available.

After School Specials Final class for karate students grades 1-8 is Friday, January 20^th. Parents and guardians should be on the look out for mid winter scheduled offerings for after school art, ballet, chess, fencing, karate and languages. A bulletin regarding these 10 week sessions will accompany next week’s Update.

Back to Play! The St. Mary coed basketball program resumes its winter schedule with games this Sunday, January 8^th at Holy Name School in West Roxbury, 525 W. Roxbury Parkway. Players are reminded to arrive 15 minutes prior to start time for games that are scheduled as follows:

Grades 1 & 2, noon
Grades 3 & 4,1:15 p.m.
Grades 5 & 6, 2:30 p.m.

St. Mary basketball enthusiasts warmly welcome!

What if? Saturday basketball practices are scheduled this weekend for grades 1 & 2 at 9 a.m.; Grades 3 & 4: 10 a.m.; Grades 5 & 6: 11 a.m. Athletes and families are asked to enter and exit St. Marys at the Harvard St. door.

In the event of inclement weather, families will be notified about practice cancellation via email.

Tuition Statements arrived via backpack this week. Please review to ensure an accurate record of volunteer and fundraising hours. We ask that parents and guardians sign the statement form and return it to school along with payment. Winter Winds bring a reminder that students should come to school dressed for the weather. Each class spends time outside as weather permits. Hats, warm coats or jackets and gloves are recommended. Looking ahead, students should wear boots for walking in icy, snowy weather. Indoors, however, students should then wear uniform shoes. All items must be labeled with student’s name.

Larz Anderson Skating Rink The Larz Anderson Skating Rink, 25 Newton Street, Brookline is now open (weather permitting). This open air skating rink has a heated pavilion with a snack bar, skate rentals and a skate sharpening shop. Public skating hours are as follows:
